In February 2016 the law establishing the school Mobility Manager came into force. One of the fields where GIS tools are essential is sustainable mobility. Let us look at a practical example involving a school.
A school mobility manager needs to organize a walking-bus service for nursery-school children.
The Ministerial Decree of 18-12-1975, in Table 1, defines the maximum distance between pupils and school facilities. In this case the maximum distance is 300 meters.
By creating a 300-meter buffer centered on the school under consideration, it is possible to identify the buildings from which the pupils come by means of a subsequent spatial query.
Once the area of influence of the nursery school and the roads serving that area have been identified, the school mobility manager can locate the collection points that will become part of the walking-bus network.
